Construction of capacitor and uses
A capacitor is a two-terminal passive device used to store energy in the form of an electric charge. It is comprised of two parallel plates which are separated from each other either by air or by some other insulating device like paper, mica, ceramic, etc.
| Capacitor Type | Dielectric Material | Electrode Material | Construction Method | Polarized? | Key Advantage | |
| Ceramic (MLCC) | Ceramic | Metal (e.g., Silver, Palladium) | Multi-layer stack, fired | No | Small, high frequency | |
| Electrolytic | Metal Oxide Layer | Etched Metal Foil & Electrolyte | Rolled cylinder, sealed can | Yes | Very high capacitance | |
| Film | Plastic Film | Metal Foil or Metallized Layer | Rolled or Stacked, Encapsulated | No | Stable, reliable, precise | |
